In 1973 Mrs. June O’Dowd was asked to establish the Louisiana National Guard Enlisted Association’s (LANGEA) Auxiliary program to help promote legislative issues and concerns that directly affect Guardsmen’s family members.
In 1974 Mrs. June attended the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the Unites States (EANGUS) Conference, held in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was during this conference that Mrs. June was elected as Vice President of the EANGUS Auxiliary.
In 1976, during the EANGUS Conference held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Mrs. June was elected as the EANGUS Auxiliary President.
Mrs. June became a lifetime member of both organizations and stayed active for several years writing many letters and making several calls to support legislative efforts on behalf of LANGEA and EANGUS.
The Louisiana National Guard Enlisted Association Auxiliary has established the Mrs. June O’dowd Scholarship Program. Submissions are due no later than 1 April 2025.
Honorary and Associate Membership does not qualify any of the persons listed above eligibility to apply for scholarship.
Parent or guardian of unmarried children who are applicants, and members whose spouse is an applicant must have at least one year remaining on his/her enlistment following completion of the school year for which application is submitted, or has served twenty (20) or more years of service.
Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.00 each. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students at an accredited college, university, trade or business school. Graduate students are not eligible for the scholarship.
Awards will be sent directly to the recipient with each check made payable to the recipient on a quarterly or semester basis. To receive the awards, verifications will be required to the effect that enrollment has commenced. To receive subsequent payments, individual must submit verification of good standing at his/her institution.
There shall be no consideration whatsoever given because of friendship, rank or grade of applicant, applicant’s parents, or applicant’s spouse. (Neither shall applicant’s geo-graphical place of residence be considered). Awards will be made on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership and need. All applications will be accomplished by:
A transcript of High School Credits and a transcript of College for applicants already in institutions of higher learning.
A letter from applicant with specific reason(s) as to his/her education and why financial assistance is required.
Former recipients of the Scholarships are not eligible to reapply. Those persons who have previously applied for a Scholarship Award and were not selected may reapply.
If the recipient does not complete the school term for which the scholarship is awarded (due to any cause other than sickness or physical injury) the recipient will refund the award to the Louisiana National Guard Enlisted Association within sixty (60) day from the date enrollment was terminated.
